Tips on Creating a Professional Wardrobe

Tips on Creating a Professional Wardrobe from a Capsule Wardrobe Expert

My cousin will soon be graduating from college and is planning to work in a professional, corporate casual setting in New York City.  She asked my advice on creating a professional wardrobe, so asked for help from my blogger friend and capsule wardrobe expert, Shelbi Samuelson.   For those that aren’t familiar with a capsule wardrobe, according to Wikipedia: “A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.”  Shelbi came up with a go-to list of starter pieces for a professional wardrobe.

Tips on Creating a Professional Wardrobe:

When making any professional transition in your life whether it’s graduating from college, going back to work after having a baby or getting a promotion, you should consider having these core pieces in your professional wardrobe. To get started, I have set up a list of high quality items that you should consider buying to last you a few years in your professional career.

Perfect Blazer

How to Find the Perfect Blazer

In my second post for my segment Secrets to a Classic Wardrobe, I will discuss the closet staple; the perfect blazer.  I’ve always loved the way the perfect blazer can pull together an otherwise ho-hum outfit.  It can make a low-key casual outfit infinitely more stylish.  The perfect blazer is also a great piece to help you transition into fall, you can easily wear a favorite summer outfit and throw on a blazer to get wear out of it as you move into fall.  I got my first blazer in New York City, shortly after graduating from college, it was a fitted black corduroy blazer.   Now corduroy is a casual fabric, but in the right color it can look more formal.    I must mention that I am talking about a blazer and not a jacket that is part of a 2 piece suit, which can often be worn as a blazer.  I will often wear the jacket of a 2 piece suit without the suit skirt or pants, but I have about 5 stand alone blazers in cotton and wool to suit my mood and any outfit.

Know your budget and stick to it.

I said this in my last post about classic black pumps, you need to stay within your budget.  If your budget is $150, find the blazer best you can for that price.… Read Full Post

Secrets to a Classic Wardrobe: Black Pumps

I’m starting a new segment on my blog called “Secrets to a Classic Wardrobe”, where I will discuss staple, classic wardrobe pieces that you will have for years.  One major wardrobe classic are black pumps.  I got my first high-end pair of simple black pumps in 2007 and I still have them.  I’m wearing them here:

Rent the Runway Review

Rent the Runway Review

Today I am going to be doing a review of the clothing and accessory rental service Rent the Runway.  Please note that this is not a sponsored post, I just wanted to give an honest review.  I’ve used this service, the unlimited service specifically, for over a year now.  This really ties into my  Buy Less, Buy Better philosophy because basically you’re not buying anything.  It’s the sharing economy, but for clothing…..now wait, if sharing clothes freaks you out, everything is always very clean before it gets to you and you’re not sharing personal items like underwear or bathing suits, which would be very gross.

Here are some pros and cons of using Rent the Runway that I’ve experienced during the past year.

Pros

  • You Get 3 Different Items at a Time– the 3 items can be anything from jewelry, handbags, dressed, to jackets and coats.  I use it mostly for dresses and outfits for specific events. it’s been great for me because I go to a lot of events here in LA.  I was becoming so unhappy with what I had in my closet and I could never find what I wanted in the stores exactly when I needed it.  Rent the Runway has been great for this reason.

How to Choose a Classic Wedge Shoe

I love a good wedge…..shoe that is, but the salad isn’t bad either. I always have several wedges in my shoe wardrobe because they are beautiful AND practical. What else would you wear to an outdoor event, especially if it’s on grass such as a wedding or graduation?

I think that wedges are classics, they don’t go out of style.  Even if you don’t see them in every fashion magazine one season, they will come roaring back the next.  According to Wikipedia:

“Wedge boots, wedgies, or lifties are shoes and boots with a sole in the form of a wedge, such that one piece of material, normally rubber, serves as both the sole and the heel. This design dates back to ancient Greece…..Wedgies for women were popularized by Salvatore Ferragamo, who introduced the design to the Italian market in the late 1930s.”

There are also health benefits to wearing a wedge shoe….who knew!?!? According to Leaf.tv:

“Women wear heels to make the legs look longer, to make the body look thinner and to improve posture. Wedge heels offer more support than stilettos or high heels. Balance is easier on a wedge, reducing the number of falls that accompany high heels.
