Tips on Creating a Professional Wardrobe

Tips on Creating a Professional Wardrobe from a Capsule Wardrobe Expert

My cousin will soon be graduating from college and is planning to work in a professional, corporate casual setting in New York City.  She asked my advice on creating a professional wardrobe, so asked for help from my blogger friend and capsule wardrobe expert, Shelbi Samuelson.   For those that aren’t familiar with a capsule wardrobe, according to Wikipedia: “A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.”  Shelbi came up with a go-to list of starter pieces for a professional wardrobe.

Tips on Creating a Professional Wardrobe:

When making any professional transition in your life whether it’s graduating from college, going back to work after having a baby or getting a promotion, you should consider having these core pieces in your professional wardrobe. To get started, I have set up a list of high quality items that you should consider buying to last you a few years in your professional career.

I’m starting a new segment on my blog called “Secrets to a Classic Wardrobe”, where I will discuss staple, classic wardrobe pieces that you will have for years.  One major wardrobe classic are black pumps.  I got my first high-end pair of simple black pumps in 2007 and I still have them.  I’m wearing them here:

          • Know your budget and stick to it.

If your budget is $150, find the best shoe you can for that price.  I would suggest going to online stores like The Outnet and Saks Off 5th.  There you can find higher end pieces at a reduced price.  Here are some options at $150 and under:

How to Choose a Classic Wedge Shoe

I love a good wedge…..shoe that is, but the salad isn’t bad either. I always have several wedges in my shoe wardrobe because they are beautiful AND practical. What else would you wear to an outdoor event, especially if it’s on grass such as a wedding or graduation?

I think that wedges are classics, they don’t go out of style.  Even if you don’t see them in every fashion magazine one season, they will come roaring back the next.  According to Wikipedia:

“Wedge boots, wedgies, or lifties are shoes and boots with a sole in the form of a wedge, such that one piece of material, normally rubber, serves as both the sole and the heel. This design dates back to ancient Greece…..Wedgies for women were popularized by Salvatore Ferragamo, who introduced the design to the Italian market in the late 1930s.”

There are also health benefits to wearing a wedge shoe….who knew!?!? According to Leaf.tv:

“Women wear heels to make the legs look longer, to make the body look thinner and to improve posture. Wedge heels offer more support than stilettos or high heels. Balance is easier on a wedge, reducing the number of falls that accompany high heels.

How to Recondition a Leather Handbag

This week in my first installment of Buy Less, Buy Better segment of my blog, I am going to show you how to Recondition a Leather Handbag, I’m going to be using a Chanel handbag that I’ve had for over 10 years. I decided to use my favorite bag so that you don’t have to worry whether my technique will hurt your favorite handbag.   When you purchase an expensive handbag, you want to have it looking fabulous for years to come.  If you take care of your handbags and re-condition them, they will look great for years.

Here is my steps step-by-step guide on how to recondition a leather handbag or you can check out the video below (all links to my favorite products are listed below the video):

  1. Clean any dirt or dust of the bag, I like this Leather Shampoo from Leather Spa.
  2. Apply leather conditioner (I like the one from Leather Spa) to the bag with a soft cloth or a paper towel, as I used in the video. Be sure to get every nook and cranny including the inside (if it’s leather that is).
  3. Let it dry for a few minutes then use a soft horse hair brush and/or clean soft cloth to buff the handbag and add shine.
